Alishan National Forest Recreation Area is located in Alishan Township, Chiayi, covering an area of 1400 hectares with the main tourism spot locating at about 2,200 meters high above sea level. It is cloudy mid-elevation temperate climate with an average annual temperature 10.6 ℃ and the annual rainfall is up to 4,000 mm. There are 209 raining days and 244foggy days on average. The heavily wet weather contribute the outstanding forest and climate landscape such as Alishan sunrise, sea of clouds, afterglow, forest, railways which count to the five famous sightseeing spots known internationally.
Alishan Mountain Range, a branch of the Central Mountain Range, is the collective name of 18 peaks including Dadong Mt. Overlapping peaks, cliffs and valleys are the common landscape.High mountains and broad valleys block the strong southwest wind, therefore in valley it is usually foggy and cloudy like the vast sea of turmoil. When the sun rises from the Central Mountain Range and the light sweeping over the sky, the clouds suddenly yield to the clear sky and it results in a grand view. In the evening the clouds are even more beautiful with the magnificent afterglow. Visitors can never forget the red and gold splendor of clouds along with the sunrise and sunset in Alishan. The most impressive landscape in Alishan would be Tashan and Duigauyuei. In Tashan the layered structure of rocks and the wrinkles resulted from orogeny are easy to spot; while in Duigauyuei people can see the endless peaks of Central Mountain Range and Yushan Mountain Range along with the magnificent sea of clouds.
