Situated in Datong Township of Yilan County,thevast 12631-hectare Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area rangesfrom 500 to 2,000 meters abovesealevel. Tianguer and Dowan Creeks, two tributaries of Lanyan River, wind through the area where high mountains and rift valley situate. It is cool in summer and snows in winter, and the average temperature is 11-12 ℃. It is a vacation spot for all seasons.

Surrounded by Sanxin, Nanhuda and Snow Mountain systems, the southwestern Taipingshan area is higher. The mountain ranges stretching from north-east tosouth west allow the north-east monsoon and sea breeze from the Pacific to gaze into the area directly. The moist wind brings abundant rainfall and foggy air all year around. The unpredictable fog and sea of clouds decorate the area, and after raining it is the most romantic moment when light mist spreads all over the clear sky. There are ten sightseeing spots and eight nature trails within the area, and the most famous spots are Jiuzhize, Taipingshan ,Maoxing and Cuifong Lake. Jiuzhize is a valley and famous for its calcium carbonate hot springs. The elegance of Jiuzhize makes people feel like staying forever. The Primeval Forest Park of Taipingshan is magically charming but also surrounded by such lonely atmosphere; therefore it is called “heaven on the earth”. Cuifong Lake is the largest alpine lake in Taiwan and it composes a beautiful picture alone with the surrounding forest and waterfowls in mist. Eight trials are unique with their own nature resources. One can go down from Maoxing and visit the impressive three-layer waterfall following the 2.7-kilometer “Three-Layer Waterfalls Trail”. In the end of 3.8-kilometer “Beech Trail” close to Cuifong Lake lies a 900- hectare pure Taiwan beech forest. The golden color in early spring and late autumn, the profile of empty braches in winter, and the advection frost in cold days are world-famous spectacular scenes.
